Pattern formation, realized long ago in biological systems, describes one of the most significant challenges to developing man-made materials with enhanced properties and performance. Interestingly, synthetic transformations operating under spatio-temporal control have yet to be extended to material processing as a tool of patterning. At Sabancı University, investigations related to polypropylene yielded an example of material patterning. The pattern was potentially formed out of non-equilibrium, spatio-temporally controlled chemical reactions. Work is ongoing to better elucidate the nature of this observation.
